One of the main physiological symptoms from concussion is sleep disturbances.
“Insomnia means being unable to fall asleep AND maintaining sleep throughout the night. This results on waking up not feeling rested. There are multiple causes of insomnia and they can range from excessive thinking or worrying, limbs being restless, and episodes of “pause in breathing” spells which can cause sleep apnea. Treatment for insomnia can be as simple as learning relaxation techniques or as complex as needing medication or even a breathing device called CPAP.”
Our sleep specialist, Dr. Lai, can see deeper issues, use techniques not offered by other general practitioners, and prescribe medication for those who are struggling with sleep.
Some general guidelines with how to improve sleep include:
- Going to bed and waking up the same time every day
- Create regular bedtime routine
- Sleep in a quiet, dark, cool room
- Use your bedroom for sleep only
- Medication may be required
